Summary: (from NCBI-Entrez) ..[read more]This gene encodes a member of the G protein-coupled receptor gene family. The encoded protein is related to the angiotensin receptor, but is actually an apelin receptor that inhibits adenylate cyclase activity and plays a counter-regulatory role against t
Tatemoto K, et al. (Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 1998) isolated and characterized a novel endogenous peptide ligand (apelin) for the human APJ receptor.
Zou et al. 2000 examined the inhibitory effects of apelin peptides on HIV infection, and found that the apelin peptides inhibit the entry of some HIV-1 and HIV-2 into the NP-2/CD4 cells expressing APJ. The inhibitory efficiency has been found to be in the order of apelin-36>apelin-17>apelin-13>apelin-12.
Characterization of apelin, the ligand for the APJ receptor J Neurochem. 2000 .
Medhurst AD, et al. (J Neurochem. 2003) identified that replacement of leucine in position 5, or arginine in position 2 and 4 of the C-terminal apelin peptide, apelin-13, resulted in significant changes in pharmacology.
