Shiratsuchi A et al. (J Biol Chem. 1997) firstly found that phosphatidylserine and probably other acidic phospholipids, which are normally localized in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane, translocate to the outer leaflet and serve as a signal for phagocytosis by Sertoli cells. Kawasaki Y, et al. (J Biol Chem, 2002) confirmed that SR-BI is a phagocytosis-inducing phosphatidylserine (PS) receptor of Sertoli cells.
